About Swampy

Old Swampy has lived in Footscray, Melbourne all his life. In the fifties as a teenager he lived in the same street as Bulldogs legend Teddy Whitten. Swampy was scoreboard operator at the Western Oval from 1969 to 1991. In ’91 the old scoreboard was replaced with an electronic version and Swampy’s services were no longer required. It was following this that his drinking increased and his life rapidly spiralled. Swampy became officially homeless in 1995. He now resides in the remains of the old scoreboard which are located in Hansen Reserve, West Footscray.
